Brownells BRN-22 Takedown Build

The Ruger 10/22 is one of the best firearm platforms ever made.  And being that we are living in a time when the Ruger patent has expired and so many awesome manufacturers have stepped up and made some awesome aftermarket parts for this ubiquitous platform makes enthusiasts like me want to build more and more of them.  It has to be one of my favorite guns to build and shoot.  Many years ago, I purchased my first Ruger 10/22 which was a Talos special addition black over stainless steel takedown model.  I had shot many of them when I was a kid and knew I wanted one.  Over time, I replaced the trigger, charging handle, internal parts, stock and other miscellaneous other upgrades and I shot it a lot. After putting a little Vortex Sparc II red dot and the Magpul X-22 Backpacker stock the gun became my funnest gun to shoot by a mile.

I remember one particular range day where I brought my brother and two good friends to the range and brought along a lot of guns to to try out.  One of my friends brought along a few guns as well and we all took turns trying them all out.  We had everything there from nice 1911's to Custom AR's and lots of awesome guns in-between.  I asked the three men which of all the guns we shot was their favorite to shoot; the answer was unanimous, the Customized Ruger 10/22 takedown.  I have performed the same experiment with others and have found identical results, the 10/22 is always chosen as the "most fun" to shoot.

After customizing and enjoying my first 10/22, I was hooked!  The first one I built was a 100% Brownells build; It had a Brownells BRN-22 receiver, bolt, and bull barrel with a Magpul x-22 stock and Ruger BX trigger.  It turned out being a very fun gun to build and shoot.  After that build, I took a long break and focused on other types of builds, that is until Brownells ran a sale on their 10/22 takedown BRN-22 receivers.  I knew it was time to build another 10/22 takedown and bought the receiver.

The fit and finish on these BRN-22 receivers is excellent and the quality you get for the money is exceptional. If you want to pick one up for yourself, you can use the following link;

I then went on Brownells and bought the rest of the parts and the build list is as follows;

I knew I wanted a Tactical Solutions X-Ring barrel and the only color available at the time was their ODG and so I thought "why not?"

I decided to go with Brownells Bolt (I did an entire post on this bolt) as its amazing for the price.

I went with Tandemkross for the following parts;

Tandemkross charging handle.

Tandemkross Cross Pins.

Tandemkross "Twister" titanium takedown knob.

And lastly a Tandemkross bolt buffer pin.

You can find all of these Tandemkross parts at Brownells through the following link;

I decided on the Powder River Precision drop in trigger and I am glad I did! This trigger is phenomenal.

Lastly, I decided to see how the Magpul X-22 Backpacker stock in ODG would look and ordered one.

Once I had all of the parts removed from their packages, I used the Hoppes lubricated wipes to apply a thin coating of oil to everything and then started the assembly.

I started by dropping the charging handle into place.

I then pulled back the charging handle to the rearmost position in the receiver and dropped in the bolt.

Next I pushed in the bolt buffer pin.

Some of those bolt buffer pins are very tricky to get in place because they are pliable, but this one went in very easily.

Next I went to install the trigger and attempted to push in the cross pins but the receiver cross pin holes but the hole were slightly too tight.

I measured and found a 3/16" drill bit was perfect and used my drill to bore the holes out slightly.

After drilling the holes out the pins fit perfectly and I was able to install the trigger.  I used a punch to line up the trigger group which helped.

I made sure the safety was centered in the trigger group and pushed the receiver into the stock.

I then installed the Tandemkross Titanium takedown screw and the rear half of the build was complete.

Next I removed the tapered barrel insert and installed the fore grip to make space for the bull barrel.

After installing the forward screw, I just clicked the two parts together and I have another 10/22 takedown!

(Pardon the workbench mess) Here is a picture of the new rifle all assembled.  After getting it put together, I really didn't love how the brighter ODG barrel looked with the much darker ODG stock.

Fortunately, I had two other 10/22 takedown stocks and so I started to play mix and match to see what looked the best.

I think the black stock looked okay, but the FDE stock looked the best.  Unfortunately, even though I thought the FDE stock looked better, I still wasn't loving having the receiver black. . . . sooooo, I did a thing which I won't reveal yet but I will tell you I will now be the owner of three 10/22 takedowns! Stay tuned as the surprise will be epic!

I recorded a YouTube video of this build and you can find it here;

Comment on which stock combination was your favorite!
