L.E. Wilson/Sinclair Case Trimmer Review
I published a YouTube video on this case trimmer and if you would prefer to watch a video instead of reading then click here;
I want to preface this review by admitting I am still relatively new to reloading. A couple years ago, I was the naive dude who was interested in reloading as a means to save money at some point by reloading instead of buying complete rounds from the factory. I learned quickly the cost difference of buying ammunition would never really catch up to the heavy cost of investing in quality reloading tools and components. But while I learned I would not be saving much money, I would be gaining accuracy.
In reloading, consistency is paramount, and as such, tools which help achieve consistency between cases and rounds are worthy investments. As brass is fired and then resized in a full length die the case can stretch slightly and thus the need of an accurate case trimmer.
As always, my search started at Brownells and I was met with a wide selection of trimmers with a verity of prices. Most of the major reloading brands offer their own trimmer. When I saw the L.E Wilson Case Trimmer with the Sinclair stand and Brownells base, I looked into it and determined it was the one for me.
You can find the L.E. Wilson case trimmer at the following link;
The trimmer is made of stainless steel and you can tell right when you see it for the first time it is made to the highest standards. It has a built in micrometer to adjust your desired case length.
On the top of the micrometer dial there is a set screw to lock in your desired length. To quote the Brownells website; "The compact micrometer unit is incorporated into the stop bearing which allows the user to easily make quick trim adjustments in .001" increments."
The case trimmer requires case holders for each caliber size.
You can find the case holders at the following link;
You take your case and coat it in your preferred lubricant, (at this point it should already be lubricated as you should have already resized the case in your resizing die).
I really like this Imperial sizing die wax. You just wipe your fingers on it and you can coat several cases. It is really good stuff.
You can fin it here;
Once the case is properly prepped, you insert it into the caliber specific case holder and then you give it a tap on the nylon puck which is built into the Brownells base.
After you've tapped it in place you can then place the case holder and case onto the rails built into the trimmer.
After placing the case holder on the rails you tun the little gate handle and it locks the case holder in place.
If your case length measurement is already set and correct, you can then slide the trimmer up to the case and turn the handle to trim the case.
Turning the handle offers pretty much zero resistance. In fact, I often let my 6 year old daughter help me trim my cases and the process is that simple and easy. The cases once trimmed can be removed by opening the gate handle, and giving the case trimmer/case a little wrap on the nylon puck to dislodge the case from the case holder.
The trimmer produces very clean and shiny edges of the case.
I think another awesome feature of this trimmer combination, is the storage included in the Brownells base.
The base can hold 9 different case holders or case sizing gauges. The base also includes 4 nice rubber feet.
The combination of the L.E. Wilson trimmer on the Sinclair stand and Brownells base is the perfect combination in my opinion. It provides for precise clean and easy and very consistent cases which result in greater accuracy at the range!
