MGW SIGHT PRO REVIEW
I made a YouTube review of the MGW Sight Pro and you can find that video here;
I started working on my own guns many years ago and like many new home gunsmiths, I learned a lot the hard way. One thing I learned early on was the concept of buying quality tools despite the higher cost.
Years ago, before I was older and wiser, I wanted to change out the sights on one of my Smith and Wesson M&P 2.0 pistols. I had no idea at the time the 2.0 series pistols had notoriously tight sights; Like machine pressed tight. So being younger and more naive, I went to Amazon to buy my first "gun smithing" tools instead of Brownells (first mistake). I shopped around and purchased this hot garbage.
I paid $38.95 for this "universal" sight pusher and not knowing any better I went to work on my pristine M&P 2.0. I had to Jerry rig this metal shim with a few washers and tape to get the proper height of the slide in the jig. I then went about struggling EVERY STEP OF THE WAY. I did eventually get the SECOND set of sights installed(I literally destroyed the first set) and was left with only a few scrapes to my once flawless slide. As my collection grew I did use this crappy tool a few more times and the results were always the same, struggle, frustration and damage. Eventually, after learning the hard way more than once and after my collection become more and more valuable, I knew I needed to upgrade my tool.
By this time I was already a devoted Brownells customer and turned to them in my search for a better sight pushing tool. Brownells offered several choices of sight pushers/movers at varying price points and I landed on two which I debated between. After talking with a Instagram friend who removes hundreds of sights a year, he told me the choice was a no brainer; GO WITH THE MGW SIGHT PRO!
I was initially hesitant because of the cost but I can say with ease it was an investment I will never regret!
At the time of my writing this, Brownells has the MGW Sight Pro listed at $280 (but you can use the coupon code "TAG" to save $15).
What doesn't come with the MGW Sight Pro is also what makes it fantastic and unique in its segment; Slide shoes. The MGW Sight Pro uses slide shoes which are gun specific. So when you buy a new gun, you'll have to also buy a slide shoe for that specific gun. The slide shoes fit in-between the slide rails and gets secured to the MGW Sight Pro with a bolt from the bottom.
Technically, the Sight Pro can secure your slide nice and tight just with the slide shoe and bolt but the tool also has four pads which apply pressure to the side of the slide which stay protected with the use of the included nylon spacers.
After everything is tightened down, you place the top of the Sight Pro on the base.
The Sight Pro has a nylon spacer which rests against the top of the slide and can be adjusted to the perfect height.
You then lock down the two large nuts on the top of the Sight Pro and you can secure it into a vice. At this point, the slide and sight pusher are married together in rock solid form. Moving the sights on even the stubborn M&P's is a breeze with the Sight Pro. The hardest and most time consuming part is the set up(which also does not take long), and after you set it up, you easily push the old sights out and the new sights in.
Luckily MGW Armory makes a solution for such a problem with their sold separately one legged pusher;I have started a nice collection of slide shoes for my collection and also other slide shoes for friends pistols. At the time of this writing, the slide shoes vary in price from $15-20 and can be found through the following link to Brownells;
The other noteworthy thing about the MGW Sight Pro is it has the bottom cut out on one side to accommodate pistols which have longer guide rod tubes (such as on 1911's).
On the left is the included chamfered pusher and on the right is the dog leg pusher for wide sights. If I recall I purchased the dog leg block from MGW directly as Brownells didn't sell this accessory (so if your reading this Brownells, add the dog leg block).
In conclusion, the old adages of "buy once, cry once" and "you get what you pay for" ring completely true in most situations and especially with the MGW Sight Pro. Its a large initial investment which you will never regret making!
